Sarita
Sarita is a romantic tragedy with songs. The sad story of an unwed mother torn between the warmth she feels for her kind, supportive partner and the compelling lust she feels for another man. Less a musical than a play with songs, Sarita is about the destructive power of love and the addictive nature of lust.
Maria Irene FornesMaria Irene Fornes is the
godmother of the contemporary avant-garde and the winner of thirteen Obie
awards. Her other plays include Mud,
The Danube, The Conduct of Life and
Fefu and Her Friends. Her work as a teacher of playwriting is
also legendary and director Jason Nodler was her student at NYU.
According to Nodler, “No one writes like Maria Irene Fornes. She is a poet in the truest sense of the word. And the worlds she creates are inherently theatrical. Susan Sontag once noted that her writing works less on the brain or heart than it does on the nerves. I’d add that she locates in her characters a desperation that is traditionally held in private and shares it freely with her audience. She is the most generous of writers.”
Nodler previously directed Mud and The Danube for Infernal Bridegroom Productions.
Catastrophic company member Mikelle Johnson, named Houston’s best actress in 2008 by The Houston Press, plays the title character.
Catastrophic company member John Duboise will compose an original score to accompany the written songs.
Sarita opens Friday, May 7 and runs Wednesdays through Saturdays until May 22. Location TBA.
All tickets are Pay What You Can.
