The Catastrophic Theatre (TCT) is an ensemble-based theatre company dedicated to creating a meaningful exchange between artists and audiences through the creation and performance of new work of all sorts.
Jason Nodler and Tamarie Cooper founded TCT in 2007, bringing together an ensemble of trained and untrained artists of all disciplines, many of whom have been collaborating for more than 15 years.
Best known as the co-founders of the nationally acclaimed Infernal Bridgroom Productions (1993 – 2007), Jason and Tamarie have written, directed, and (in Tamarie’s case) starred in some of Houston’s most memorable theatrical productions.
Managing director Kirk Markley, also a former Infernal Bridegroom company member, joined the staff as managing director in 2009.
Here’s what you can expect from The Catastrophic Theatre:

- a fiercely independent spirit
- exciting partnerships and collaborations with other artists of various disciplines
- a pronounced sense of fun, both in our performances and in our special events
History
In our inaugural season, TCT partnered with Stages Repertory Theatre, Diverseworks Artspace, Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex and the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance to produce five plays which had never before been performed for Houston audiences.
Big Death and Little Death, The Strangerer and Spirits to Enforce were all regional premieres. The Splasher and The Tamarie Cooper Show were created by the company and had their first public performances on Houston stages. The Splasher was named “Best New Play” of 2008 by The Houston Press in its “Best of Houston” issue and The Strangerer and Spirits to Enforce were named among the top ten theatre experiences of the year by The Houston Chronicle.
Our first show of 2009 Hunter Gatherers received rave reviews and sold-out houses. The Houston Chronicle called it, “a vivid Houston premiere…with a strong cast that makes the most of its biting black comedy and outrageously extreme action” and named it one of the top ten productions in Houston last year. And The Houston Press called it “the funniest and deadliest show mounted anywhere in the city [last] season.” The Tamarie Cooper Show: Journey to the Center of My Brain (in 3D) nearly sold out a 5-week run at Stages, earning a reader’s choice “Best Original Show” award from The Houston Press. Life is Happy and Sad, a new play concerning music and art legend Daniel Johnston that played at DiverseWorks ArtSpace, attracted dozens of audience members from outside of Houston and garnered an unprecedented seven rave reviews. Hater Magazine called the play “more thought and heart provoking than you could have ever banked on.”
